About This Experience
Beautiful cliffs, amazing grottoes and fantastic little sandy beaches make this tour a Magical experience!
The stretch of coast between Portimão and Benagil is one of the Algarve's most photographed, and for good reason. Sheer limestone cliffs drop into turquoise water, sea caves have been carved into improbable shapes by centuries of erosion, and small beaches appear in the gaps, accessible only by boat or a very determined scramble. This two-hour cruise takes you along that coastline at a leisurely pace, with time to explore the caves up close and, conditions permitting, a stop for a swim.
You depart from Portimão's marina, passing the fishing village of Ferragudo and the 17th-century fortress that guards the harbour mouth. The boat is typically a mid-sized motorboat or RIB, stable enough for all ages but open to the elements, so expect sun, spray and wind depending on the weather. The skipper keeps the speed moderate, allowing you to take in the scenery without the rush of a high-speed thrill ride. As you head east towards Carvoeiro, the cliffs begin to dominate the view, their ochre and rust tones shifting with the light.
The highlight is the series of grottoes around Algar Seco and, most famously, Benagil itself. The boat enters each cave slowly, manoeuvring through narrow openings to reveal chambers lit by shafts of sunlight from openings in the rock above. Benagil Cave, with its cathedral-like interior and circular skylight, is the star attraction, and you will have time to photograph it from multiple angles. Depending on the tide and the number of other boats, you may not be able to land inside, but the view from the water is striking enough.
If sea conditions allow, the skipper will anchor near a quiet beach or cove for a swim. The water is clear and cold, even in summer, and the chance to cool off after sitting in the sun is welcome. Not every departure includes a swim stop, as it depends on swell, wind and the group's preferences, so if this is important to you, mention it when booking.
This cruise suits families, couples and anyone who wants to see the Algarve's coastal geology without the effort of kayaking or paddleboarding. It is accessible for most ages and fitness levels, though very young children may find two hours on the water long. The boat can be choppy in anything other than calm conditions, so if you are prone to seasickness, take precautions. Conversely, if the sea is flat, the ride is smooth and relaxing.
Portimão is easy to reach by car, with several large car parks near the marina. If you are staying in Carvoeiro, Lagos or Albufeira, the drive is under half an hour. Bring sun cream, a hat, a towel if you plan to swim, and a waterproof case for your phone or camera. The boat does not have shade, so you will be in full sun for most of the trip. Free cancellation is offered, which is sensible given that the tour is weather-dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are poor. The high rating reflects the reliability of the operator and the simple fact that this coastline, seen from the water, is genuinely impressive.
