About This Place
Consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches — iconic golden cliffs, the famous double sea arch, crystal-clear water, and the starting point of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.
Praia da Marinha — The Algarve's Signature Beach
Praia da Marinha is regularly cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and one of the most iconic in Lagos. The Michelin Guide, Condé Nast Traveller, and numerous international rankings have all placed it at or near the top. For once, the hype is earned.
The Beach
The beach sits at the base of golden limestone cliffs, accessed by a long staircase from the car park above. The descent is steep but manageable, and the relative effort keeps crowds thinner than at more accessible Algarve beaches.
What makes Marinha distinctive is the rock architecture. Sea stacks, arches, and sculpted cliff faces surround the beach on three sides, with the famous double sea arch (sometimes called the "M-rock" or "Elephant Rock") standing offshore — one of the most photographed natural formations in Portugal.
The sand is golden-coarse and the water exceptionally clear, with visibility often reaching 15 metres or more. The rock formations close to shore create sheltered pools that warm faster than the open Atlantic.
Snorkelling
Marinha is one of the best snorkelling spots on the Algarve coast. The rocky reefs on both sides of the beach support a variety of marine life — wrasses, sea bream, octopus, and occasionally cuttlefish. The water clarity is excellent and the formations provide natural structure that attracts fish.
No equipment rental is available on the beach itself, so bring your own or rent from nearby Carvoeiro or Lagoa. A wetsuit is recommended outside of July and August — the Atlantic is rarely above 20°C even in peak summer.
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
Praia da Marinha is the eastern starting point of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos), widely regarded as the best coastal hike in Portugal. The trail runs 6km west along the cliff tops to Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing through seven distinct hanging valleys — each a collapsed ravine thick with vegetation that drops to the sea.
Along the way you'll pass sinkholes, natural bridges, and cliff-edge viewpoints with staggering views down to turquoise water and hidden beaches far below. The trail is well-marked and mostly flat (despite the "hanging valleys" name), taking 1.5 to 2 hours one way. Most hikers walk the full 12km return.
Key stops along the trail include Benagil Cave (viewable from the cliff top, with the famous oculus visible below), Praia do Carvalho (a beach accessed through a hand-carved tunnel in the cliff), and Algar Seco (dramatic rock formations with pools and blowholes near Carvoeiro).
Kayaking
From Marinha beach, several operators run kayak tours east towards Benagil and the sea caves. The 2-hour round trip typically covers the coastline between Marinha and the Algar de Benagil, with stops at several hidden beaches and smaller caves along the way. Conditions are usually calm enough for kayaking from May through October.
Practical Notes
Parking fills early in summer — arrive before 10am between June and September. There are no facilities on the beach (no bar, no umbrellas for rent), so pack accordingly. The nearest restaurants are at the car park level or a short drive to Benagil village or Carvoeiro.
The beach is a 10-minute drive from Lagoa and about 25 minutes from Portimão or Albufeira.
