About This Experience
Comfortable small fiberglass boats, visiting the interior of the most beautiful Benagil Seacaves, rockformations and deserted beaches located in Carvoeiro. Warmly welcomed by charming box office...
This boat tour departs from Carvoeiro and heads east along the coast to Praia da Marinha, taking in the Benagil sea cave and a string of lesser-known grottos, rock formations, and deserted beaches along the way. It is a longer version of the standard Benagil trip, giving you more time on the water and a wider sweep of the coastline.
The boats are small fibreglass vessels, which means they can slip into narrow caves and get close to the cliffs in a way larger boats cannot. You enter the Benagil cave itself — the famous dome with the skylight — and spend time inside while the skipper points out features and gives you a chance to take photos. Beyond Benagil, the route continues past a series of arches, stacks, and hidden coves, many of which are only accessible by sea.
The skippers know the coast intimately and are good at spotting wildlife. Dolphins are sometimes seen, though sightings are never guaranteed and depend entirely on luck and season. The commentary is informal and delivered in a mix of languages depending on the group, with a focus on the geology, local history, and the best angles for photos.
This is a popular route, and the Benagil cave in particular can get crowded, especially in summer. The operators stagger departure times to avoid bottlenecks, but you are unlikely to have the cave to yourself. The trade-off is that the longer itinerary gives you more breathing room elsewhere, with stretches of coastline that see far fewer visitors.
The tour is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, though the boats are open and can be bumpy if the sea is choppy. Motion sickness can be an issue for some, so if you are prone to it, consider taking precautions. The boats are not covered, so sun protection is essential — hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen.
Carvoeiro is a small resort town on the central Algarve coast, about an hour from Faro. The boat departs from the beach in the centre of town, which is easily reached on foot from most local accommodation. Parking is available nearby, though it fills up quickly in high season. If you are staying further afield, Carvoeiro is well-connected by road and served by local buses, though a car gives you more flexibility.
The tour lasts around ninety minutes, which is long enough to cover the highlights without feeling rushed. Departure times vary depending on the season and tide, so check in advance. The sea is calmest in the mornings, which also tends to offer the best light for photography. Bring a waterproof bag for phones and cameras — spray is common, and the boats sit low in the water.
