About This Route
A rugged headland walk on the western Algarve coast, with dramatic cliffs, sweeping beaches, and some of Portugal's best surf spots.
Part of the Rota Vicentina network, this circular walk explores the dramatic headland of Pontal da Carrapateira. The orange, red, and yellow cliffs contrast starkly with the deep blue Atlantic.
The Landscape
Carrapateira is known for its wild beauty - unlike the sheltered bays of the southern Algarve, here the Atlantic storms in with full force. The resulting landscape is dramatic and ever-changing.
Surf Culture
The beaches of Amado and Bordeira are famous surf spots, and even if you don't catch waves yourself, watching the surfers adds to the atmosphere.
Wildlife
The coast is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. Keep an eye out for peregrine falcons and choughs nesting on the cliffs.
