The Trail of the Headlands runs along a relatively quiet section of the central Algarve coast, east of Carvoeiro and west of Armação de Pêra. Opened in 2018, it covers just over six kilometres of clifftop walking, linking several headlands and offering long views over the Atlantic. The route is similar in character to the better-known Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, with the same golden limestone cliffs and hidden coves, but it sees fewer visitors and retains a quieter, less curated feel.

The landscape is archetypal Algarve coastline: rugged cliffs dropping to turquoise water, narrow beaches accessible only by steep paths or boat, and a clifftop scrubland of wild rosemary, lavender and sea thrift. In spring, the vegetation is dotted with wildflowers; by midsummer, the ground is baked hard and the colours muted. The trail follows the cliff edge for most of its length, with occasional detours inland to skirt private land or avoid unstable sections of cliff. The path is well marked and easy to follow, though some stretches are rocky and uneven underfoot.

One of the route's highlights is the Torre da Lapa, a restored watchtower perched on a headland roughly halfway along the trail. Built in the seventeenth century, it was part of a coastal defence network designed to warn of pirate raids and naval threats. Watchtowers like this one were positioned along the entire Algarve coast, close enough to relay signals by fire or flag, and the system could alert Lisbon to an incursion within hours. The tower at Lapa has been carefully restored and stands as a reminder of a time when this coastline was a frontier rather than a holiday destination.

The trail takes around two and a half hours to walk at a steady pace, though it is easy to spend longer if you stop to explore the beaches or simply sit and watch the sea. There is no shade, so sun protection is essential in summer, and the clifftop can be windy even on calm days. The path is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs, and some sections require a head for heights — the cliffs are sheer in places, and the drops are significant. If you are uncomfortable with exposure, this may not be the walk for you.

The Trail of the Headlands can be walked as a standalone route or combined with neighbouring coastal paths for a longer day out. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is nearby and offers a similar experience with more dramatic rock formations and a higher profile. If you prefer quieter trails and are happy to forgo some of the spectacle for a bit more solitude, the Headlands route is worth considering.

Access is straightforward if you are driving; there are small car parks at either end of the trail. Public transport is less convenient, though buses run along the N125 and you can walk to the trailhead from the nearest stops. Bring water, as there are no facilities along the route, and sturdy footwear is advisable given the uneven terrain. This is a walk for anyone who enjoys coastal scenery and does not mind a bit of rough ground underfoot.
