About This Experience

Explore the scenic Seven Hanging Valleys trail in the Algarve on a guided hike. Discover stunning landscapes, majestic cliffs, and awe-inspiring views at every step.

The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is one of the Algarve's most celebrated coastal walks, and for good reason. This guided hike takes you along a stretch of clifftop that feels both wild and wonderfully accessible, where ochre-red sandstone drops away into turquoise water and every turn reveals another improbable rock arch or hidden cove. It is not a wilderness expedition, but it is a proper walk—around four hours in total—and having a guide means you get the stories behind the geology, the names of the beaches below, and a sense of where you are in the bigger picture of this coastline.

You start with pickup from Albufeira or Armação de Pêra, which takes the guesswork out of parking and timing. The walk itself begins near the Alfanzina Lighthouse, a whitewashed sentinel perched above the cliffs. Your guide will point out how the lighthouse contrasts with the raw rock around it, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make you forget you are only a few kilometres from busy resort towns. From there, the trail weaves eastward, hugging the clifftops and dipping occasionally toward the shore.

One of the memorable moments comes at Praia do Carvalho, where you descend through a narrow tunnel carved by time and tide to reach a small, sheltered beach. It feels like stepping into a secret, even though you are sharing it with a handful of other walkers. Further along, you reach Praia da Marinha, often cited as one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. The rock stacks here are famous—jagged, honey-coloured pillars rising from the sand—and you will have time to take photographs and catch your breath before continuing.

The trail is well-maintained but uneven in places, with steps, loose gravel, and the occasional steep section. It suits anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, but it is not ideal for very young children or anyone uncomfortable with heights. The cliffs are dramatic, and while there are barriers in some spots, much of the path runs close to the edge. Wear sturdy shoes, bring sun protection, and carry water—there is little shade once you leave the trailhead.

This is a morning or afternoon outing, depending on the season, and the light makes a difference. Late morning can be bright and hot, especially in summer, while an afternoon departure offers softer colours and fewer people on the trail. The guide keeps the pace relaxed, with regular stops for photos and explanations, so it never feels rushed. If you are the sort of traveller who prefers to walk independently, you can certainly do this route on your own, but the guided version adds context and removes the need to navigate or arrange transport back.

The tour is priced from €45 per person and includes the guide, pickup, and drop-off. Free cancellation is available, which is useful given how much the experience depends on weather. Wind and rain can make the cliffs slippery and the views less rewarding, so it is worth checking conditions before you commit. Overall, this is a straightforward, well-organised way to see one of the Algarve's most photogenic stretches of coast without needing to plan every detail yourself.
