The São Lourenço Trail is a short, easy loop through the wetlands of the Ria Formosa near Quinta do Lago, offering some of the best birdwatching in the Algarve without the need for a long hike or specialist equipment. The trail is flat, well-marked and accessible to families, making it a good choice if you want to combine a walk with time on the beach or are looking for a gentle outing that still delivers on wildlife.

The route starts near Quinta do Lago beach, one of the Algarve's most beautiful stretches of sand, and loops through a mix of freshwater lakes, salt pans, pine woodland and reed beds. The variety of habitats attracts a wide range of bird species, and the trail is designed with birdwatchers in mind, with a wooden hide overlooking the main lake where you can sit and observe without disturbing the birds.

The star species here is the Purple Swamphen, a large, striking bird with deep blue plumage and a red beak and legs. It is the symbol of the Ria Formosa and is found in only a few places in Portugal, so spotting one is a real highlight. The freshwater lake is also a reliable spot for flamingos, which often feed in the shallows, their pink forms vivid against the green reeds. Herons, egrets and various waders are common, and during migration season in spring and autumn, the diversity increases significantly as birds pass through on their way to and from Africa.

The trail is well-signed and takes around two hours to complete at a leisurely pace, though you can easily spend longer if you stop to watch the birds or simply sit and enjoy the setting. The paths are mostly boardwalks and sandy tracks, so they are easy to walk and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs in most sections, though some parts can be uneven.

Beyond the birdwatching, the walk offers a sense of calm that is rare in the busier parts of the Algarve. The landscape is open and quiet, with the sound of the wind in the reeds and the occasional call of a bird. It is a good place to reset after a few days on the beach or in the resort towns, and the proximity to Quinta do Lago beach means you can combine the walk with a swim or a meal at one of the beach restaurants.

Quinta do Lago is best reached by car, as public transport options are limited. There is parking near the beach, though it can fill up in high summer. The trail is open year-round, but spring and autumn are the best times for birdwatching, as the resident species are joined by migrants. Early morning is the most productive time for sightings, as the birds are more active and the light is softer.

Bring binoculars if you have them, as they make a significant difference, and a field guide or bird app can help with identification. The trail is exposed in places, so sun protection and water are essential in summer. The combination of easy walking, varied birdlife and the option to finish with a swim makes this one of the most accessible and rewarding nature outings in the Algarve.
