About This Place
Inland gateway town to Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo luxury resorts. Home to Igreja de São Lourenço with exceptional azulejo tile interiors—one of Portugal's finest.
Almancil is a small village in the central Algarve, nestled in the pine and cork forests of the interior. It's best known as a base for exploring the rolling countryside, walking trails, and quiet rural life. The village itself is modest—a small collection of shops, restaurants, and houses—but its location makes it useful for hikers and those wanting to escape the coast.
Setting
Almancil sits inland, about 15km north of the coastal strip. The surrounding landscape is classic interior Algarve: sandy soil, pine trees, occasional cork oaks, and small traditional villages. It's warm and dry, especially in summer.
What to Do
The main reason to base yourself here is the walking. Several good hiking trails start nearby or pass through the area. Rocha da Pena, a distinctive limestone ridge, is one of the most famous walks in the interior—offering views across the countryside and the coast beyond.
The village has a few small restaurants and cafes serving local food. Market day brings more local life.
Getting There
Almancil is on the EN125, easily accessible by car from the coast. It's about 20km inland from Vilamoura or Quarteira. No airport is nearby; Faro is about 30km away.
When to Visit
