About This Place
Inland market town with a famous Saturday market and Moorish castle. Less touristy than coastal towns with authentic Portuguese atmosphere and vibrant Carnival celebrations.
Loulé is one of the Algarve's most authentic towns—a working market town in the hills just inland from the coast, where tourism exists but does not dominate. It's a place where locals conduct their daily lives, and visitors are welcome to join in.
The heart of Loulé is the Saturday market (though a smaller weekday market operates most days). Stalls overflow with fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, herbs, local cheeses, and flowers. The market building itself is a beautiful 19th-century ironwork structure. If you arrive early, the energy is palpable—farmers and merchants setting up, shoppers filling baskets, the smell of fresh produce and coffee.
The castle ruins sit above the town center, dating back to the Moorish occupation. They're partial—just walls and towers remain—but they're atmospheric and free to walk. From the castle, views stretch across the town and the surrounding farmland and hills.
Loulé's main church (Igreja da Matriz) is a working parish church with baroque and gothic elements. The town has several small museums, including a folk museum and a dial museum. A few good local restaurants and cafes operate here, serving traditional Algarve food—not tourist versions, but the real thing that locals eat.
Loulé is a hub for the surrounding Caldas de Monchique mountains and rural Algarve. Many visitors use it as a base for hiking, or stop here on a scenic drive through the foothills. The Saturday market alone justifies a visit. And because Loulé is not heavily touristed, staying or spending time here feels like accessing a more genuine version of the region.
