From intimate RIB speedboats to luxury catamarans, there are dozens of ways to see the Algarve from the water. This guide compares the best options so you can pick the right trip.

The Algarve's Coastline Is Best Seen From the Water

The Algarve has over 150km of coastline, and the most dramatic stretches are the cliff faces, sea caves, and hidden beaches that you can only access by boat. Every marina town offers boat tours, but the options can be overwhelming. Here's how to choose.

Benagil Cave Tours: The Must-Do

The Benagil sea cave, with its iconic collapsed ceiling opening to the sky, is the Algarve's most famous natural landmark. You can see it from the cliff above, but getting inside is the real experience.

Small group RIB boats (6-12 people) are the best value. They're fast, get into the cave mouth easily, and cover more coastline per hour than larger vessels.

Kayak tours give you the most intimate experience. You paddle right into the cave at water level and can beach on the sand inside. Requires moderate fitness.

Dolphin Watching

Resident pods of common and bottlenose dolphins live off the Algarve coast year-round. Operators from Lagos and Albufeira run 2-3 hour trips with marine biologists on board.

Sighting rates are 90%+ in summer. Morning trips (before 11am) typically have calmer seas and more active dolphins.

Sunset Sailing Cruises

For pure relaxation, catamaran sunset cruises depart from most marinas. Open bar, swimming stops, and the golden light on the limestone cliffs. These fill up fast in peak season.

Tips for Booking

  • Book 2-3 days ahead in July-August; same-day often works in spring/autumn
  • Morning trips have calmer seas and better cave visibility
  • Bring: Sunscreen, water, a light cover-up (spray from the boat)
  • Sea sickness: Take medication 30 min before if you're prone; larger boats are more stable
