Jumping out of an aircraft at ten thousand feet is not for everyone, but for those willing to try it, the Algarve offers one of Europe's most scenic drop zones. The skydive takes place above Alvor, a coastal town just west of Portimão, where the views on the way down take in miles of coastline, the estuary, the hills of Monchique inland and, on clear days, the horizon where the Atlantic meets the sky. The whole experience, from arrival to landing, takes around two hours, though the freefall itself lasts only seconds.

A tandem jump means you are harnessed to an experienced instructor who handles the technical side, leaving you free to focus on the experience rather than the mechanics. After a brief but thorough safety briefing, you are fitted with a harness and introduced to your instructor, who will have thousands of jumps behind them. The instruction is straightforward: how to position your body, what to expect during freefall, and how the parachute deployment will feel. There is no need for prior experience, and the tone is reassuring without downplaying the intensity of what you are about to do.

The aircraft climbs steadily, and the anticipation builds as the ground recedes. At ten thousand feet, the door opens, and the reality of the jump becomes immediate. You shuffle to the edge, harnessed tightly to your instructor, and then you are out. The freefall lasts around fifteen seconds, during which you accelerate to terminal velocity, approximately 135 miles per hour. The sensation is overwhelming: the noise, the wind, the sudden drop and the adrenaline all combine into something that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget.

Once the parachute deploys, the world shifts from chaos to calm. The descent under canopy takes several minutes, and this is when you can actually take in the view. The Algarve spreads out below, the coastline traced in gold and blue, and the silence after the roar of freefall is almost surreal. Your instructor may let you steer the parachute, or simply guide you down, depending on your confidence and the conditions. The landing is on a designated zone near the drop zone, and most people touch down with a mixture of relief, exhilaration and the urge to do it again.

This suits thrill-seekers, milestone celebrators and anyone who has always wondered what freefall feels like. It is not suitable for anyone with serious health conditions, particularly heart or back problems, and there are weight limits that will be communicated when you book. The minimum age is typically sixteen, and parental consent is required for under-eighteens. If you are nervous, that is entirely normal; the instructors are used to it and will talk you through every stage.

The drop zone is located near Alvor, easily reached from most Algarve resorts. Parking is available on-site. Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes; sandals and flip-flops are not permitted. You will be asked to sign a waiver, and there may be a short wait if the weather is marginal, as jumps are only conducted in safe conditions. Free cancellation is offered, which is important given that wind and cloud can ground operations at short notice. The experience is intense, brief and utterly memorable, and the Algarve setting adds a layer of beauty to what is already an extraordinary way to spend a morning.
