This is the highest tandem skydive available in Portugal, and the altitude makes a difference. The jump itself happens quickly once you are in the air. The plane is purpose-built for skydiving, which means it is fast and functional rather than comfortable, and the climb to altitude takes about fifteen minutes. The door opens, the instructor shuffles you into position, and then you are out. The first few seconds are disorienting — the wind, the noise, the speed — but the freefall settles into something closer to flying than falling. You hit terminal velocity almost immediately, which is somewhere around two hundred kilometres per hour, and the sensation is less like dropping and more like being held in place by the air.
The parachute opens after about a minute, and the shift is abrupt. The noise stops, the speed drops, and the descent becomes quiet and controlled. The canopy ride back to the airfield takes several minutes, and it is a good chance to actually look at the view without the wind trying to rip your face off. The landing is straightforward if you follow the instructor's directions — legs up, let them take the impact, and try not to faceplant.
The whole experience from briefing to landing takes roughly two hours, which includes waiting for your turn if the day is busy. The airfield is in the central Algarve, and the location gives you a clear view of both the coast and the interior. Practically, this is not an activity for people who are ambivalent about heights or speed. The freefall is intense, and the parachute ride is only calm by comparison.
