About This Experience

Join a small exclusive group or private wine tour of two local vineyards/farms and their cellars, guided by a wine expert and learn about all the process of winemaking, from the vineyard to the...

The Algarve's wine industry has spent the last two decades quietly rebuilding its reputation, and this three-and-a-half-hour tour offers a proper introduction to what's happening beyond the beach resorts. You'll visit two working estates, both small-scale and family-run, where the focus is on quality rather than volume. The tour is led by a wine expert who knows the region's history and can explain why the wines here taste different from those made further north.

Each estate visit follows a similar structure: a walk through the vineyards to see the vines and understand the terroir, a tour of the cellar where the winemaking happens, and a seated tasting of three wines. The guide will talk you through what you're drinking, pointing out the characteristics that come from the grape variety, the soil and the climate. You'll learn how to taste properly, not just drink, and how to recognise the flavours that define Algarve wines: the minerality from the limestone, the brightness from the Atlantic influence, the warmth from the long summers.

The estates themselves are often as interesting as the wine. Many occupy old farmhouses or quintas that have been in the same family for generations, with cellars that blend traditional methods and modern equipment. Some are experimenting with indigenous grape varieties that fell out of favour during the twentieth century but are now being rediscovered. Others are producing small-batch wines that never leave Portugal, sold only to locals and visitors who know to ask.

The tastings are generous, with three wines at each estate, and you're encouraged to ask questions and compare notes with the rest of the group. The group size is kept small, which means the experience feels more like a conversation than a lecture. Between the two estates there's usually a short drive through the countryside, past cork oak forests and almond groves, with the guide providing context on the landscape and the region's agricultural traditions.

This is a popular tour, with a strong rating of 4.89 from over a hundred reviews, and it's easy to see why. It's well-paced, informative without being overwhelming, and the quality of the wine is consistently high. It suits anyone with an interest in wine, whether you're a serious enthusiast or just curious about what the Algarve produces. It's also a good choice if you want to see more of the interior, away from the coastal strip where most visitors spend their time.

The tour includes all tastings and transport between the estates, so you don't need to worry about driving. It runs year-round, though the vineyards are at their most photogenic in late summer and early autumn when the grapes are ripening. If you're staying in the central Algarve, this is a half-day outing that offers something different from the usual beach-and-boat routine, and you'll leave with a better understanding of why Algarve wine is finally being taken seriously.

Located on the north border area of Portimão and Alvor. With the big mountain of Monchique, that dominates the view when we are at the vineyards, this large property has also growing areas of cork trees, wheat fields and orange trees. In the family since 1865 and producers of grapes from a long time, this farm built their modern winery in 1999 and were the first producing certified designation of origin wines in the Algarve. In the esplanade, at the shop or at the oak barrels is visible the tradition of this family estate.
