A catamaran cruise from Portimão is one of the gentler ways to reach the Algarve's most photographed stretch of coast. The route takes in the golden cliffs and sea caves between Praia da Rocha and Benagil, including the cathedral-like Benagil Cave itself, and runs close enough to shore that you can pick out the detail in the rock without the pitch and roll of a smaller boat.

You leave from Marina de Portimão and head east past Carvoeiro, Algar Seco, and a string of beaches and formations with names like Três Castelos, Paraíso, Vale de Centeanes, and Praia da Marinha. The crew will point out the landmarks, but much of the pleasure is simply watching the cliffs slide past from the sunbathing nets or the shaded deck. If you prefer to stay dry, the nets at the bow are an excellent place to stretch out with a book or simply watch the water.

Lunch is served on board and includes a pastel de nata and one drink. The meal is straightforward rather than elaborate, but it means you are not hunting for a restaurant when you get back to shore. On the return leg, if the wind is right, the engines are cut and the sails go up, which is quieter and more atmospheric than motoring the whole way.

The cruise suits anyone who wants to see the caves without committing to a kayak or a high-speed trip, and it works well if you are travelling with children or mixed-ability groups. The main trade-off is time: you are out for several hours, so it is not a quick morning errand. Portimão is well connected by bus and car, and the marina is clearly signposted.
