This is a two-hour coastal boat tour from Portimão, running east along the cliffs to Praia da Marinha and back, with the primary focus on entering as many of the sea caves as conditions allow. The boats used are small rigid inflatables — typically seating ten to twelve passengers — powered by Yamaha outboards and sized specifically to fit through the narrow cave entrances that larger vessels cannot navigate. The tour is operated by experienced local skippers who know the coastline, the tides, and which caves are safe to enter on any given day.

The route follows the same stretch of coast that every boat tour from Portimão covers: past Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, along the base of the ochre cliffs, past rock arches and hidden coves, and into the concentration of caves and formations between Benagil and Marinha. The difference here is the boat's size and the operator's willingness to go inside. Where a catamaran or larger vessel will pause outside a cave entrance and let you look in, these boats slip through the openings, cut the engine, and let you see the interior — the light filtering through cracks in the rock, the way the water changes colour in the enclosed space, the scale of the chambers carved out by millennia of wave action.

Benagil is the star attraction, and the boat enters the cave through the seaward opening, circling inside the domed chamber so everyone on board gets a clear view and a chance to take photographs. The cave is as striking from the water as it is from above — a cathedral-like space with a circular skylight where the roof has collapsed, and a small beach at the back where kayakers and swimmers gather in summer. The boat does not land; it hovers inside for a few minutes, then exits and continues along the coast. Depending on sea conditions, the tour will also enter several smaller caves — some with multiple chambers, others little more than tunnels through the rock — and pass close to formations like the Alfanzina lighthouse, the twin arches near Marinha, and the sea stacks that punctuate the shoreline.

The two-hour duration is tightly paced. There is not much downtime — the boat is either moving or paused inside a cave — and the focus is on covering the highlights efficiently rather than lingering. The ride can be bumpy, especially on the open stretches between caves, and the small boat size means you feel every wave. This is not a problem in calm summer conditions, but in spring or autumn when the Atlantic is livelier, expect to get wet and to hold on. The boats are stable and the skippers are skilled, but if you are prone to seasickness or uncomfortable in small boats, consider a larger vessel or a shorter tour.

This trip suits anyone who wants to see Benagil and the surrounding caves from the water without spending half a day on a boat or committing to the physical effort of kayaking. It is efficient, affordable, and focused on the geology and the caves rather than swimming, snorkelling, or extended cruising. Families with older children will find it manageable; younger ones may struggle with the duration and the lack of shade. The boats have no toilet, no shelter from the sun, and limited storage, so pack light — sun cream, a hat, sunglasses, and a waterproof phone case are all you need. Wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting wet.

Departure is from Portimão marina, where several operators run similar tours. Check in at the kiosk near the departure point, usually located along the eastern side of the marina near the fish market. The tour runs year-round, but cave access depends on sea conditions, and winter departures are sometimes cancelled if the swell is too high. Summer mornings are the most reliable, with calmer water and better light inside the caves. If photography is a priority, aim for a mid-morning departure when the sun is high enough to illuminate the cave interiors without harsh shadows.
