The stretch of coast between Portimão and Praia da Marinha is one of the Algarve's defining landscapes: honey-coloured cliffs riddled with sea caves, arches carved by millennia of Atlantic swell, and beaches accessible only by boat. This outing covers that route in detail, visiting around twenty caves along the way, including the Benagil grotto with its cathedral-like dome and oculus open to the sky.
You depart from Marina de Portimão, a modern harbour with five gold anchors and Blue Flag status, and head east along the coast. The boat is skippered by an experienced captain who knows the caves intimately and can navigate safely into formations that larger vessels cannot approach. The route takes in hidden grottoes, natural tunnels and rock stacks, with running commentary on the geology and history of the shoreline.
The headline attraction is Benagil Cave itself, one of the most photographed natural features in Portugal. Entering from the sea, you find yourself beneath a vaulted ceiling with a circular opening above, through which light pours onto a small sandy beach. It is a genuinely impressive sight, and the boat lingers long enough for photographs and a proper look around.
Midway through the voyage there is a swimming stop, usually at a sheltered cove or near one of the beaches. Snorkelling equipment is provided, and the water is clear enough to make good use of it. Afterwards, back on board, there is a toast with champagne or soft drinks, a small flourish that marks the end of the swimming interlude and the start of the return leg.
The entire outing lasts around two and a half hours, which is enough to cover the route without feeling rushed but short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon. It suits families, couples and groups who want a comfortable introduction to the coast without paddling a kayak or scrambling down cliff paths. The boat is stable and the pace relaxed, though the sea can be lively in the afternoon or during unsettled weather.
Portimão Marina is easy to reach by car, with ample parking, and also accessible by bus from Lagos, Albufeira and other resort towns. Arriving fifteen minutes early is sensible, as boarding is prompt and the boat leaves on schedule. Bring sun protection, a towel if you plan to swim, and a waterproof pouch for phones and cameras. Morning departures generally offer calmer conditions and softer light for photography.
