Benagil & Marinha Boat Tour

About This Experience

The Benagil Express Gold Tour last's 2hours, and departs from Portimão, heading eastwards. You pass the castle of S. João do Arade at Ferragudo and head out to sea, following the coastline of cliffs...

This two-hour boat tour sets off from Portimão's marina and sweeps eastward along one of the Algarve's most dramatic stretches of coast. You'll pass the old fort of São João do Arade standing guard over Ferragudo's waterfront, then head out into open water where the cliffs begin in earnest. The route takes in the sculpted limestone stacks at Algar Seco, the pocket beaches of Carvoeiro, Centeanes and Carvalho, and eventually the star attraction: Benagil Cave, with its cathedral ceiling open to the sky.

Along the way the boat threads into a string of sea caves, their interiors lit by shafts of sunlight filtering through cracks in the rock. The exact number varies with conditions, but you'll typically enter ten or twelve, each with its own character. Some are narrow slots where the hull nearly grazes the walls; others open into vaulted chambers with turquoise pools at the base. The skipper knows where the light falls best and will pause for photos.

Past Benagil the cliffs rise higher still, and you'll reach Praia da Marinha, often cited as one of Europe's most photogenic beaches. The twin sea arches here are postcard-perfect, and if the swell is calm there's a chance to jump in for a swim. The water is clear and cold, even in summer, and the stop adds a welcome break to what is otherwise a seated trip.

This is a popular outing, and boats fill quickly in high season. The route is exposed, so expect some spray and a bit of chop if there's any wind from the south. Bring a light waterproof and sun protection. The tour suits families, though very young children may find the engine noise and movement tiring. If you're prone to seasickness, take precautions before departure.

Portimão's marina is well signposted and has ample parking nearby, though it gets busy by mid-morning. Arriving fifteen minutes early gives you time to check in and claim a seat near the bow, where the views are widest. The tour runs year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best balance of light, fewer crowds and manageable seas.
