Departing from Portimão, this two-hour coastal cruise heads east into the heart of the Algarve's limestone coast, where centuries of Atlantic weather have carved one of Europe's most striking shorelines. You'll slip past the old castle at Ferragudo, then follow a procession of cliffs, sea stacks and hidden coves that would be impossible to reach on foot. The headline stop is Benagil Cave, a vast dome with a circular skylight that has become one of Portugal's most photographed natural features.
The route takes you into a series of sea caves, each one different in scale and character. Some are tight squeezes where the boat slows to a crawl; others open into echoing chambers where the water glows an unearthly blue-green. The crew will point out formations and adjust the approach depending on swell and tide. You'll pass the rock formations at Algar Seco, the small beaches of Carvoeiro, Centeanes and Carvalho, and eventually reach Praia da Marinha, where twin arches frame the ocean and the cliffs are striped in ochre and white.
If conditions allow, there's a swimming stop near Marinha. The water is bracingly clear and the setting is spectacular, though the swim is optional and depends entirely on the day's sea state. Even without it, the trip offers plenty of time on deck to take in the scale of the coastline and the way the light shifts across the rock.
This is one of the most established boat tours on the central Algarve coast, and it has earned strong ratings from hundreds of previous visitors. It's a good choice for first-timers who want to see the famous caves without committing to a full-day excursion. Families manage well, though the boat can be lively in anything but calm seas. Bring layers, a hat and something waterproof if there's any chance of spray.
Portimão's marina is easy to reach by car and well served by local buses from Lagos, Praia da Rocha and Albufeira. Parking fills early in summer, so allow extra time. The tour runs throughout the year, though the best light and calmest seas are typically found between April and October.
