The Algarve's relationship with cork is not immediately obvious to most visitors, but spend any time inland and you will start to notice the groves of cork oak that cover the low hills north of the coast, their trunks stripped in neat bands that leave the bark looking like it has been peeled by hand. This full-day outing takes that quiet presence and turns it into a coherent story, starting in Loulé's covered market and ending at a working cork factory in São Brás de Alportel, the small town that once sat at the centre of the region's cork trade.

The morning begins at Loulé market, which is one of the better traditional markets in the Algarve and worth visiting even if you are not on a guided tour. The building itself is Moorish-revival, built in the early twentieth century, and inside you will find stalls selling bread, cakes, honey, dried figs, liqueurs, fresh fish and a rotating selection of seasonal produce. Cork is harvested by hand every nine years from the same trees, and the processing — stripping, boiling, flattening, cutting — has changed less than you might expect over the past century. The factory floor is loud, dusty and functional, and the guide explains each stage of the process as you move through the building. You will see sheets of raw cork being sorted, punched into stoppers, or prepared for use in flooring, insulation and other applications. It is not a polished, visitor-centre experience; it is a working factory that happens to allow tours, and that roughness is part of the appeal.
