About This Experience
A tour for true explorers, this incredible tour takes you to the interior of the Algarve with its traditions, history and stunning landscapes. Tasting of traditional liquors and honey tasting. We...
The interior of the Algarve is a landscape of low mountains, cork forests, and villages that feel untouched by the coastal boom. This full-day jeep safari takes you into that hinterland, following dirt tracks and minor roads through terrain that most visitors never see.
You travel in an open-top 4x4, which means dust, wind, and unfiltered sun, but also unobstructed views and a sense of being properly out in it. The route varies depending on the operator and the season, but typically includes a visit to a cork oak forest, where the guide explains the harvesting process and the role cork plays in the regional economy. There is usually a stop at a small producer for tastings of medronho, the local firewater distilled from arbutus berries, along with honey or other preserves.
Depending on conditions and permissions, the tour may include a swim stop at a natural spring or reservoir, where the water is cold and clear and the setting feels a long way from the beach crowds. You also visit at least one historical site: often the ruins of a Moorish castle or a fortified village that marks a chapter in the Reconquista. The commentary covers local history, agriculture, and the ways the landscape has been shaped by centuries of human use.
The roads are rough in places, and the jeep does not have the suspension of a modern SUV, so expect to be jostled. This is not a tour for anyone with back problems or anyone who prefers their sightseeing smooth and air-conditioned. It is, however, a good choice for families with older children, couples looking for something more adventurous than a beach day, and anyone curious about the Algarve beyond the resorts.
Bring sun protection, a hat that will not blow off, and a layer for the higher elevations, which can be cooler even in summer. Wear shoes that can handle dust and uneven ground. The tour runs year-round, though summer can be very hot and winter brings the risk of muddy tracks. Lunch is not always included, so check the details when you book.
