Kayaking into the sea caves around Benagil is one of the Algarve's signature experiences, and doing it with a guide who knows the coast well turns a paddle into something more like an informal geology lesson. You spend two hours on the water, moving between caves, arches and rock formations that have been shaped by millennia of wave action, with time to stop, explore, and hear the stories behind what you are seeing.

The stretch of coast between Benagil and Marinha is a maze of hollowed-out cliffs and cathedral-like caverns, many of them only accessible by kayak or swimming. The rock here is soft limestone, layered and golden, and the Atlantic has carved it into shapes that shift from dramatic to delicate depending on the light. Your guide will lead you into the larger caves, point out the smaller ones you might have missed, and explain how the geology works—why some caves have collapsed into open domes, why others remain narrow and echoing, and how the process continues with every winter storm.

Benagil Cave itself, with its circular skylight and crescent of sand, is the centrepiece, but the route takes in several others along the way. You will paddle through arches, drift into grottoes where the water glows turquoise, and likely pause for a swim if conditions allow. The kayaks are stable doubles, so if you are new to paddling or travelling with someone less confident, you will not feel out of your depth. The guides are patient, the pace is relaxed, and there is no expectation that you arrive with prior experience.

This is a popular outing, and for good reason—it offers access to places you cannot reach on foot and a perspective on the coast that feels genuinely different from the cliff-top view. It suits anyone reasonably fit and comfortable in the water, though it is not ideal for very young children or anyone with limited mobility. The two-hour duration is well judged: long enough to feel like a proper exploration, short enough that your arms will not be protesting by the end.

Departures are typically from Benagil beach, where you will be fitted with a life jacket, given a brief safety talk, and launched from the sand. The best conditions are in the morning or late afternoon, when the sea is calmer and the caves less crowded. Bring sun cream, a hat that will not blow off, and a dry bag if you want to protect your phone. The water is cool even in summer, but once you are moving, it feels refreshing rather than cold. Expect to get wet, and plan accordingly.
