Paddling downstream is one thing. Paddling back against the current is another, and not everyone wants to end a kayak trip with tired arms and the same scenery in reverse. This tour solves that problem by collecting you in a vintage Toyota 4x4 from the 1980s, turning what could be a slog into something more like an adventure.
The kayaking itself follows the river, not the open coast, so the water is calmer and the pace more relaxed than sea cave tours. You are moving with the flow, drifting as much as paddling in places, with time to take in the banks, the birdlife, and the way the landscape shifts as you leave the start point behind. The river is tidal, and the route is planned to make the most of the current, so you are working with the water rather than against it.
The 4x4 pickup is the other half of the experience. It is not a modern off-roader with air conditioning and tinted windows, but an older, more characterful vehicle that feels like it belongs on dirt tracks and back roads. The return journey takes you through parts of the Algarve that are not on the usual tourist routes, past smallholdings and scrubland, with the kayaks loaded in the back and the windows open. It is a practical solution that also happens to be more interesting than a minibus.
This is a good choice if you like the idea of kayaking but are put off by the thought of the return leg, or if you are travelling with someone who is fit but not especially keen on endurance paddling. It suits couples, small groups, and anyone who wants a bit of variety in their day rather than a single-focus activity. Families with older children will enjoy the novelty of the 4x4, though younger kids may find the kayaking itself too long.
You will get wet, so dress accordingly. Shorts and a T-shirt that can dry quickly are better than anything cotton, and footwear that can go in the water is essential. A hat and sun cream are non-negotiable in summer, and a waterproof pouch for your phone or camera is worth having if you want to take photos along the way.
The tour starts and ends at different points, so you will need to arrange transport to the start location or confirm whether pickup is included. The Algarve's river valleys are less developed than the coast, and mobile signal can be patchy, so make sure you have clear directions before you set off. The 4x4 ride back is bumpy in the best possible way, and the views from the higher ground are worth the dust.
