Paddling along the Algarve's coastline in a sea kayak offers a perspective you simply cannot get from the beach or a larger boat. This two-hour guided tour takes you close to the cliffs, into sea caves and alongside rock formations that have been carved by centuries of Atlantic weather. A local guide leads the way, pointing out geological features, fossils embedded in the limestone and the small marine creatures that cling to the rocks at the waterline.

The pace is relaxed and suitable for beginners, though you will need a basic level of fitness and confidence on the water. The kayaks are stable sit-on-top models, and a support boat shadows the group throughout for safety and assistance if needed. That support vessel also carries any kit you do not want to get wet, so you can bring a camera or phone in a drybag without worrying about capsizing.

Midway through the route, the group stops at a sheltered beach that is only accessible by sea. Here you can snorkel in the clear water, explore the shoreline or simply stretch your legs on the sand. The guide often brings along snorkelling masks and a few other bits of beach kit, and this pause gives everyone a chance to rest before heading back.

It is not a wildlife-watching trip in the formal sense, but you may spot fish, crabs and the occasional seabird depending on the season and conditions.

Departure points vary depending on sea state and the time of year, but most tours leave from beaches between Lagos and Albufeira. The operator confirms the exact meeting spot when you book. Expect to get wet — even on a calm day, spray and splashes are part of the experience. Bring sun protection, a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards.

This is not the trip for anyone uncomfortable with confined spaces or low light, as some of the caves are narrow and shadowy inside. Nor is it ideal in high summer if you are sensitive to heat, since there is little shade on the water. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of calm seas and comfortable temperatures.
