Kayaking is the only way to properly enter the sea caves along this stretch of the Algarve coast, and Benagil is the most famous of them. The cave's circular skylight and cathedral-like interior have made it one of Portugal's most photographed natural features, but the experience of paddling into it yourself, rather than glimpsing it from a crowded tour boat, is what makes the effort worthwhile.

This is a guided outing, not a rental, which matters more than you might think. The coastline between Benagil and Marinha is a maze of arches, grottoes and narrow passages that are easy to miss or misjudge without local knowledge. The guide will lead you into caves where the ceiling drops low and the light turns golden, and point out features—a hidden beach, a colony of nesting birds, a formation that looks like something else entirely—that you would otherwise paddle past.

The sea here is usually calm in summer, but conditions can change. Swell, wind and tide all affect whether certain caves are accessible, and on some days the tour route will be adjusted to avoid rougher water. If you are prone to seasickness or uncomfortable in small boats, ask about conditions when you book. The kayaks themselves are stable sit-on-top models, and no previous experience is required, but you will get wet and you will need to paddle continuously for stretches.

The Benagil cave itself is often busy, especially in the middle of the day when boat tours arrive in quick succession. Early morning or late afternoon departures give you a better chance of having the cave to yourself, even if only for a few minutes. Inside, the beach is small and the sand is soft. The light through the skylight shifts with the sun, and the acoustics are strange—voices echo, waves sound louder than they are.

This is not a tour for young children or anyone with limited mobility. Getting in and out of the kayak from the beach requires a degree of agility, and the paddling, while not strenuous, is steady. It suits active travellers who want to see the coast from a different angle and are comfortable spending time on the water. Bring sun protection, a towel, and a dry bag for anything you do not want soaked. Phones and cameras are better left behind unless they are waterproof.

Most tours depart from Benagil beach itself, a small cove reached by a steep path from the clifftop car park. Arrive early if you are driving, as spaces fill quickly in summer. The beach has a couple of cafés and a toilet block, but little else. The setting is beautiful, the cliffs honey-coloured and sculpted by wind and salt, and the water is clear enough to see the rocks below your kayak as you paddle out.
