This three-hour catamaran cruise from Portimão Marina to Benagil and back is one of the more affordable ways to see the central Algarve coast by boat. It is a shared trip, usually with several dozen passengers, and the format is straightforward: a slow cruise east along the cliffs, a close look at Benagil Cave from the water, a swimming stop if conditions allow, and a return to Portimão. The boat is a purpose-built catamaran with a large deck, a shaded lounge area, two restrooms, a bar, and free WiFi, so it is set up for comfort rather than speed or adventure.
The route heads out of the Arade estuary and follows the coast past Ferragudo, then continues east past a series of named beaches and headlands: Caneiros, Carvoeiro, Alfanzina. The catamaran stays close enough to shore for you to see detail in the rock formations—arches, stacks, collapsed caves—and the crew will point out landmarks as you pass. The commentary is delivered over a PA system and tends to be brief and factual. The pace is slow, which suits photography and gives you time to take in the scale of the cliffs.
Benagil Cave is the main attraction and the boat will pause offshore to give everyone a view. The catamaran does not enter the cave—it is too wide—but a smaller support boat is available to ferry passengers inside for a closer look. This service is not included in the base price and is paid for at check-in, subject to availability and sea conditions. If you want to go inside, factor in the extra cost and be aware that it may not run if swell is high.
After Benagil the boat continues to Praia da Marinha, a beach regularly cited in lists of the world's most beautiful, though much of its appeal is the setting rather than the sand itself: a small cove framed by jagged limestone outcrops and clear turquoise water. The boat will stop here for swimming if the sea is calm. The stop lasts around twenty to thirty minutes, and you swim directly from the catamaran; there is a ladder at the stern for getting back on board. If you are not a confident swimmer or the water is choppy, you can stay on deck.
The return leg retraces the route back to Portimão. The bar on board serves drinks and light snacks, all paid for separately. The onboard WiFi works well enough for messaging but is not fast, and the signal drops in and out depending on how far offshore you are.
This tour is best suited to visitors who want a relaxed, low-effort way to see the Benagil coast without kayaking or joining a speedboat. It is not the most intimate or flexible option—you are on a set route with a large group and limited time at each stop—but it is comfortable, affordable, and runs reliably throughout the season. The catamaran is stable and the ride is generally smooth, though it can pitch in heavier swell. If you are prone to seasickness, sit toward the centre of the boat where motion is less pronounced.
Free cancellation is offered, which is useful given that sea conditions can change and the tour may be rescheduled or modified if weather is poor. The crew is experienced and safety-focused, and the operator states clearly that some activities—particularly the swimming stop and the small boat transfer into Benagil—depend on conditions and may be curtailed. If you are booking primarily to swim or to go inside the cave, be prepared for the possibility that neither will happen.
