The Benagil Cave has become the Algarve's most photographed sea cave, and this two-hour boat tour out of Portimão is one of the faster ways to see it. You travel in a rigid inflatable with space for twelve passengers, which means the boat sits low, moves quickly, and can tuck into gaps that larger vessels cannot. The route runs east along the coast from Portimão, past the ochre cliffs of Carvoeiro and into the stretch of coastline where the limestone has been hollowed into arches, tunnels and cathedral-sized caverns.

Benagil itself is the headline, but the tour does not stop there. You pass under natural bridges, nose into smaller grottoes where the light turns the water turquoise, and the guide — often a marine biologist or someone with equivalent training — points out geological features and the occasional dolphin if the conditions and luck align. Dolphins are not guaranteed, and the tour is not billed primarily as dolphin-watching, but the route overlaps with feeding grounds for common and bottlenose dolphins, and sightings happen often enough that the crew knows where to slow down and scan.

The boat itself is built for speed and manoeuvrability rather than comfort. Seating is on the inflated sides, there is no shade, and when the boat accelerates between stops you feel every ripple. Wear layers you do not mind getting wet, bring sun cream, and if you are prone to seasickness, take something beforehand. The Atlantic off the Algarve is usually calm in summer, but even a light chop translates into a bumpy ride on a RIB.

What you gain in return is proximity. Larger tour boats cannot enter the caves; they stop outside and passengers transfer to smaller tenders or kayaks. On this boat, you are already in the small vessel, and the entire tour is conducted at cave height. The Benagil visit is brief — you motor in, circle once, motor out — but you are close enough to see the circular skylight, the sand floor, and the people who paddled in on their own.

The tour suits anyone comfortable on the water who wants to see the coastline efficiently. It does not suit young children, anyone with back or neck issues, or anyone expecting a leisurely cruise. The pace is brisk, the commentary is informative without being scripted, and the whole experience is over in two hours, which leaves the rest of your day free.

Portimão's marina is the departure point, well signposted and walkable from the town centre. Parking is available but fills quickly in summer. The tour runs year-round, though winter departures depend on sea conditions.
