About This Experience

Discover the secrets of our coast, the famous “Algar de Benagil” cave, one of the ten natural wonders of the world, dream beaches framed by golden cliffs and dive into the clear and crystalline...

The stretch of coast between Portimão and Benagil is one of the most photographed in Portugal, a fifteen-kilometre run of golden cliffs, sea arches and caves that glow amber when the light is right. This ninety-minute boat tour covers the highlights, including Benagil Cave itself, and departs from Portimão Marina, which is easier to reach than some of the smaller beach launch points further east.

The Kyros is a mid-sized vessel that holds up to forty-five people, with covered seating, a toilet, and a sound system for the guide's commentary. It is larger than the small rigid inflatables that dart in and out of the caves, but it is stable and comfortable, and it can still get close enough to the cliffs to give you a proper look. The tour follows the coastline east, passing the dramatic rock formations at Algar Seco, the Praia da Marinha with its famous arches, and the trail of Sete Vales Suspensos that runs along the clifftop above.

Benagil is the centrepiece. The boat slows as it approaches, and if conditions allow you will enter the cave itself, or at least get close enough to see inside. The collapsed dome and the shaft of light pouring through the oculus are as striking as the photographs suggest, and the guide will give you time to take photos and absorb the scene. In summer the cave can be crowded with kayaks and other boats, so the experience is less serene than you might hope, but it is still impressive.

After Benagil the boat continues along the coast, stopping at other caves and rock formations that are less well known but often just as beautiful. The guide provides commentary in Portuguese and English, pointing out features in the cliffs and explaining how the coast was shaped by erosion and tectonic shifts. The tone is friendly and the information is pitched at a general audience, so you do not need any prior knowledge to follow along.

This is a good option if you want to see the Benagil coast without the effort of kayaking or the expense of a private charter. The boat is comfortable, the route is well planned, and the crew are professional. The downside is that it is a group tour, so you are on someone else's schedule and the experience is less personal. If the boat is full, it can feel a bit crowded, and you will not have the flexibility to linger at a particular spot or skip one that does not interest you.

Portimão Marina is easy to reach by car or taxi, with ample parking nearby and good signage. The tour runs several times a day in high season and less frequently in winter, when the weather is less predictable. The sea is calmest in the morning, and the light on the cliffs is best in the late morning or early afternoon. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a light jacket in case the wind picks up. The boat is covered, but you are still exposed to the elements.

If you are staying in Portimão or the western Algarve and want a straightforward way to see Benagil and the surrounding coast, this is a solid choice. It is not an adventure, but it is efficient and reliable, and the scenery speaks for itself.
