Ninety minutes on a RIB from Portimão takes you along the same stretch of coast that dozens of operators cover, but the speed and proximity to the water make it feel more immediate than a larger boat. You meet at the pier, listen to the safety briefing—life jackets, handholds, what to do if someone goes overboard—then board the rigid inflatable and head out into the estuary. The boat is fast and sits low, so expect spray and a bit of bounce; if the Atlantic is lively, you will feel every swell.

The route heads west briefly to pass the Fort of Santa Catarina, a squat stone sentinel guarding the mouth of the river, then swings east along the cliffs toward Benagil. You will see Ferragudo's castle perched above the water, a picturesque jumble of whitewashed houses climbing the hillside, and a working fishing village where nets are still mended by hand on the quayside. The coastline between Portimão and Benagil is a succession of natural arches, sea caves, and hidden beaches, each one carved by millennia of winter storms. The skipper will slow at the more photogenic spots and offer commentary, though the engine noise and wind make conversation difficult.

The Benagil Cave is the headline attraction, and it deserves the attention: a cathedral-sized hollow with a collapsed roof that lets a column of sunlight fall onto the sand below. The boat pauses at the entrance long enough for photos and a good look, but you do not land inside. On summer mornings the cave can be crowded with kayakers and other tour boats, all jostling for position, but the scale of the place still registers. The light inside changes throughout the day; early morning and late afternoon are best for photography, though tour times are fixed and you take what you are given.

This is a short, sharp outing for people who want to see Benagil without spending half a day on the water. It suits couples, small groups, and families with older children who are comfortable on a fast boat. It is less suitable for very young children, anyone prone to seasickness, or anyone who prefers a slower, more sheltered vessel. The RIB is exhilarating when the sea is calm and punishing when it is not; if the forecast shows more than a light chop, consider rescheduling. Portimão Marina is well signposted and has paid parking nearby, though spaces fill quickly in summer.
