A rigid inflatable boat changes the character of a coastal tour. It's faster than a traditional vessel, more manoeuvrable in tight spaces, and capable of getting much closer to the rock faces and cave mouths that define the Algarve's central coastline. This ninety-minute trip from Portimão to the Benagil area is built around that advantage — speed, proximity and a smaller group size than the big tourist boats.

The RIB cuts through the chop quickly, heading east past Ferragudo's fort and out towards the open coast. You'll have a few minutes under the dome, enough to take in the scale and the light, before moving on to the next formation.

The route also includes a string of lesser-known caves and hidden beaches, places that don't have names on the tourist maps but are just as striking. Your captain will share some local knowledge — where the fishermen used to shelter, which caves flood at high tide, what the rock layers tell you about the geology — delivered in a conversational way rather than a scripted commentary.

This suits travellers who want something more dynamic than a slow cruise but less strenuous than kayaking. The RIB is stable and safe, but it's not a gentle ride — expect some bounce and spray, especially on the open water stretches. It's not ideal for very young children or anyone with mobility concerns, but for most adults it's exhilarating rather than uncomfortable.

The smaller group size is part of the appeal. You won't be on a boat with fifty other passengers, and the experience feels more personal as a result. The skipper can adjust the route slightly based on the group's interests, linger a bit longer at a particular spot, or skip the places that are overrun with other boats.
