Portimão to Benagil: Adrenaline Wave 90 Minutes Cave Tour

About This Experience
Want something exciting? Looking for something to boost your holidays? Do you want to explore one of the most iconic venues in the Algarve? The coastline, and it's majestic caves?
If you want to see the Benagil caves quickly and are not bothered by speed, this is one of the faster ways to do it. The trip runs from Portimão to Benagil and back in a speedboat small enough to slip inside the narrower caves, and the pace is brisk enough that the whole thing is over in ninety minutes.
You meet near the ruins of the San Francisco Convent in Portimão, where the crew runs through a safety briefing and hands out automatic life jackets. The boats are new and built for maneuverability rather than comfort, which means you will feel every wave and turn. If you are prone to seasickness or prefer a smoother ride, this is not the trip for you. If you like the idea of skimming across the water and ducking into caves at speed, it delivers exactly that.
The route follows the coast east, passing cliffs, beaches, and a series of caves before reaching Benagil. The boat is small enough to enter several of the caves, and the skipper will slow down for photographs and commentary. The Benagil Cave itself is the centerpiece, and you will get close enough to see the light pouring through the roof and the sand at the base. You do not land, but the view from the water is striking, and the boat's size means you are not jostling with a dozen other vessels.
The return leg is faster, and if the sea is calm, the crew may open up the throttle. The whole experience is high-energy and efficient, which suits people who want to tick off the caves without spending half a day on the water. It does not suit young children, anyone with mobility issues, or anyone who wants a leisurely, contemplative trip. The automatic life jackets are a necessary safety measure, but be aware that tampering with them carries a replacement charge.
Portimão is easy to reach, and the meeting point is well signposted. Book ahead in summer, as the boats fill up. Bring sun protection, a waterproof case for your phone, and a sense of humor about getting wet. The trip is short, the scenery is excellent, and the pace is relentless. If that sounds appealing, it is worth the morning.
What You'll See
Stop
Portimão Marina is located on the western side of Portimão and offers not only a safe haven for sailors, but also a lively and fun spot to spend sunny summer days or to watch the waves in the winter.
Stop
We will go to Benagil, a small fishing village on the southern coast of the Algarve which has gained fame in recent years thanks to its incredible sea cave, however there is much more than just a cave to explore in this picturesque Algarve destination. The most well-known of the rock formations is the Cave of Benagil (Gruta de Benagil), where the Algar de Benagil is also located. This gigantic cave is sometimes referred to as the Benagil Cathedral because of the various arches it forms, which, viewed from the outside of the cave, give it the appearance of a cathedral.
