Portimão: Wreck Diving in the Ocean Revival Park

The Ocean Revival Park off Portimão is one of Europe's largest artificial reef projects, created in 2012 when the Portuguese Navy scuttled four decommissioned warships to provide habitat for marine life and a new attraction for divers. The wrecks sit upright on the seabed at varying depths, from around ten metres to just over thirty, and in the years since they've been colonised by fish, octopus, crustaceans and soft corals. This four-hour outing takes you out to dive on one or more of the wrecks, depending on your certification and experience.

The trip is run in partnership with established local dive schools, so the operation is professional and safety-focused. You'll be briefed on the site before you leave the marina, with the dive plan tailored to the group's experience level. If you're a beginner or diving within recreational limits, you'll explore the shallower sections of the wrecks, swimming through open decks and around the superstructure. If you're advanced-certified and comfortable at depth, you can go deeper to see the hull and the areas where marine life has really taken hold.

The wrecks themselves are impressive even before you consider the biology. The largest is a former frigate over a hundred metres long, and swimming alongside something that size underwater is a different experience from seeing it in a photograph. The visibility is generally good, often ten to fifteen metres, and the water is calm enough that the dives are relaxed rather than challenging. Inside the wrecks the light dims and the structure becomes more complex, with passageways and compartments that are safe to explore but require a torch and a steady hand.

Marine life varies with the season and the time of day, but you're likely to see schools of bream, sea bass and mullet, along with smaller species that have made the wrecks their permanent home. Octopus hide in the nooks, and if you're diving in the evening or early morning you might see them out hunting. The corals and sponges are still developing, but they're noticeably more abundant than they were in the early years of the project.

The outing includes tanks and weights, so you only need to bring your own mask, fins and wetsuit if you prefer. If you don't have your own gear, the dive school can provide it for an additional cost. The trip is suitable for certified divers only, and you'll need to show proof of qualification before you're allowed in the water. This is a strong option if you're a diver visiting the Algarve and want something more interesting than a reef dive. The wrecks are unique in the region, and the marine life is improving every year. It's also possible to arrange reef dives or night dives if the wrecks don't appeal or if you want to dive multiple times during your stay. The trip departs from Portimão Marina, easy to reach and well-equipped, and the four-hour duration includes the boat ride, the dive and the return journey, so it fits neatly into a morning or an afternoon.
