Private excursion to the caves of Benagil Beach de la Marinha

About This Experience
Your crew, Hélder and Julie, welcome you aboard their boat Motion. The boat does not accommodate more than 14 people and easily enters the caves. Prepare to live two hours of wonder and discovery...
Benagil Cave has become the most photographed spot on the Algarve coast, and for good reason. The collapsed sea cave opens to the sky through a natural oculus, and when the light pours in it turns the sand and water inside a luminous amber. This private boat tour takes you there, along with a string of other caves and rock formations between Benagil and Praia da Marinha, and because it is private, you set the pace and the stops.
You are met by Hélder and Julie, a young couple who run the boat themselves, and the tone is relaxed and personal from the start. The vessel is small—it holds no more than fourteen people—which means it can slip into caves that larger boats cannot reach and manoeuvre close to the cliffs without feeling crowded. The tour lasts around two hours, and the route follows the so-called Golden Coast, a stretch of limestone cliff and hidden beaches that runs west from Portimão.
Benagil is the headline act, but the coastline either side of it is just as striking. You will pass through narrow archways, into chambers where the walls are streaked with ochre and rust, and along cliff faces that rise sheer from the water. The crew know the coast well and will point out details you might otherwise miss—fossils in the rock, nesting birds, the way the light changes as you move in and out of the caves. They also know when to stop talking and let you take it in.
Because this is a private charter, you can ask to linger at a particular spot or skip one that does not interest you. If you want to swim, they will find a sheltered cove and wait. If you are travelling with children or older relatives, the crew will adjust the itinerary to suit. The boat is stable and comfortable, with seating for everyone, and the small size means it feels more like an outing with friends than a commercial tour.
This is not the cheapest way to see Benagil, but it is one of the most pleasant. The larger group tours can feel rushed and impersonal, and you are often jostling for space inside the cave itself. Here, you have time and quiet, and the crew's enthusiasm is genuine. They clearly enjoy what they do, and that makes a difference.
The tour departs from various points along the coast depending on your preference and where you are staying. Praia da Marinha and Benagil Beach are common starting points, and both are accessible by car with parking nearby. The sea is calmest in the morning, and the light inside the caves is best before midday, so an early start is worth it if you can manage one. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a camera, and be prepared for some spray if the swell is up. The boat is covered, but the sides are open.
If you are looking for a more intimate way to experience the Algarve's most famous stretch of coast, this is a good option. The crew are friendly without being overbearing, the boat is the right size, and the two hours pass quickly.
What You'll See

The shape and colors of the cliffs change along the way. You will be surprised by the caves accessible only by sea, such as the great cave of smugglers or the incredible cave of Lovers.
