About This Experience
This activity has been designed by a local ‘expert’, who has created a fun experience that takes you to some of the town’s highlights and the lesser-known places, away from all the tourists. The...
Alvor is one of those Algarve fishing villages that has grown into a resort town without entirely losing its older character. The backstreets still hold whitewashed houses, tiled doorways and a working harbour where fishermen mend nets in the morning. This self-guided scavenger hunt takes you through both the tourist centre and the quieter corners, using puzzles and clues to reveal details you'd otherwise walk straight past.
The route has been designed by someone who knows the town well, and it deliberately steers you away from the main beach promenade into lanes where murals, old statues and architectural oddities become waypoints. Each puzzle is tied to a landmark or feature, and solving it unlocks the next step. You'll learn fragments of local history, spot details on building facades and occasionally be sent off-piste to find something tucked behind a square or down an alley.
Because the activity runs through an app on your phone, you can tackle it at your own pace. If you want to stop for coffee or a pastel de nata halfway through, the app simply pauses and picks up where you left off. If you're competitive, you can race through in under two hours. If you prefer a slower wander, it becomes a half-day outing with breaks for lunch or a drink overlooking the estuary.
This works best for small groups or families who enjoy a bit of problem-solving and don't mind looking slightly conspicuous as they peer at doorways or count tiles. It's not a conventional walking tour, and there's no guide to ask questions of, so you're relying on the app's instructions and your own curiosity. The puzzles are pitched somewhere between a treasure hunt and a pub quiz, and they're meant to be fun rather than frustrating.
Alvor is easily reached by car from Lagos, Portimão or the western resorts, and there's free parking near the riverfront. Local buses also connect the town to Praia da Rocha and Portimão. The activity works year-round, though summer heat can make midday walking less pleasant. Spring and autumn are ideal, when the streets are quieter and the light is softer.
