Portimão is the Algarve's second city and its main working port, which gives it a different flavour from the resort towns further east. There's a riverfront promenade, a reconstructed old quarter, a lively fish market and a scattering of street art and public sculpture that most visitors miss entirely. This self-guided scavenger hunt takes you through the centre on a route that mixes the obvious with the overlooked, using puzzles and clues to turn a walk into a game.

The activity is built around landmarks, murals, statues and architectural details that you might otherwise pass without noticing. Each puzzle is tied to a specific feature, and solving it reveals the next step. Along the way you'll pick up fragments of local history, decode inscriptions and occasionally be sent down side streets in search of something unexpected. The route has been designed by someone who knows the city well, and it deliberately avoids the main tourist drags in favour of quieter squares and backstreets.

Because the whole thing runs through an app on your phone, you can tackle it at your own speed. If you want to stop for lunch or a drink, the app pauses and remembers where you left off. If you're in a hurry, you can race through in a couple of hours. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, it becomes a half-day outing with breaks for coffee or a browse through the market.

It's not a conventional walking tour, and there's no guide to ask questions of, so you're relying on the app's instructions and your own curiosity. Portimão is easy to reach by car, train or bus from anywhere on the central or western Algarve. There's paid parking near the riverfront and free parking a short walk inland. The activity works year-round, though summer heat can make midday walking less pleasant. Spring and autumn are ideal, when the streets are quieter and the light is kinder.
