Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve (then known as Xelb), is one of Portugal's most historically significant and atmospheric towns. Situated on the banks of the Arade River and surrounded by orange groves, it offers a stark contrast to the coastal resort towns, with its winding cobblestone streets, red sandstone monuments, and deep medieval roots.

Silves Castle is widely considered the best-preserved Moorish fortification in Portugal. Its imposing red sandstone walls (Gres de Silves) offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The Cathedral of Silves is recognized as the most important Gothic building in the Algarve, built on the site of a former Grand Mosque. Notable for its fortress-like exterior and beautiful Manueline high altar. Houses the tombs of several bishops and crusaders who participated in the Reconquista. Located directly opposite the equally charming Igreja da Misericórdia.
