About This Experience
Explore the charming traditional market of Olhão with its variety of fresh fish and seafood! Discover the Ria Formosa Natural Park on a boat trip around the islands. Discover its fauna, flora,...
Ria Formosa is a different Algarve: a shallow lagoon system stretching along the eastern coast, protected by a chain of barrier islands and tidal channels that shift with the seasons. This full-day tour, based in Olhão, is designed to show you both the natural park and the working town that depends on it.
You begin at Olhão's municipal market, a twin-domed Moorish-style building facing the waterfront. Inside, the stalls are piled with fish and shellfish hauled in that morning: gilt-head bream, octopus, clams, and the oysters for which the Ria Formosa is increasingly known. The market is at its busiest on Saturdays, and even if you are not buying, it is worth half an hour to absorb the atmosphere and see what the lagoon yields.
From there you board a boat for a tour of the islands. The route and duration vary with the tide, but you will pass salt pans, oyster beds, and stretches of marsh where herons and flamingos feed. The guide explains the ecology of the lagoon, the traditional fishing methods still in use, and the history of Olhão as a port. There is a stop on one of the islands, typically Armona or Culatra, where you have time to walk the sand-spit beaches or find lunch at a local restaurant. Lunch is not included, but the guide will point you toward good options.
Back in Olhão, the tour concludes with a walk through the old town: a grid of whitewashed houses with flat roofs and narrow streets that feel more North African than Portuguese. The town played a notable role in the resistance to Napoleon, and the guide will fill in the history as you go.
This is a tour for people who want to understand a place rather than simply photograph it. The pace is relaxed, the group is small, and the day has room to breathe. It suits anyone with an interest in ecology, traditional livelihoods, or coastal landscapes that have not been turned into resorts. Families with older children will find it engaging; younger ones may struggle with the length of the day. Bring sun protection, comfortable shoes for walking on sand and cobbles, and cash for lunch and any market purchases.
