About This Experience
Part of Benagil Beach, we visited between 15/20 caves and deserted beaches. Includes the Benagil Cave, Praia da Marinha among others.
The stretch of coast between Benagil and Praia da Marinha is the Algarve's most photographed shoreline, and this hour-long boat tour shows you why. Departing from Benagil Beach itself, the route threads through a sequence of sea caves, natural arches and hidden coves that would be invisible from the clifftops and unreachable on foot.
The headline attraction is the Benagil Cave, that cathedral-sized grotto with the oculus skylight that appears on every Algarve postcard. You approach it from the water, gliding beneath the entrance and into a space where the light turns golden and the acoustics go cathedral-quiet. Depending on tide and swell, the boat may pause inside long enough for photographs, though you will not disembark.
Beyond Benagil, the tour continues east along the coastline, visiting somewhere between fifteen and twenty caves and beaches depending on conditions. Some are narrow fissures you nose into briefly; others are wide amphitheatres open to the sky. Praia da Marinha, with its famous limestone stacks, is seen from the sea rather than from the clifftop viewpoint most visitors know. The geology here is endlessly varied—honeycombed rock, wave-cut platforms, strata tilted at improbable angles—and the water shifts from deep blue to turquoise as the seabed rises and falls.
This is a popular tour, and with good reason. The one-hour duration keeps it accessible for families and those with limited time, and the departure point at Benagil Beach means you can combine it with a morning on the sand. The boats are typically open, so bring sun protection and a hat. If you are prone to seasickness, consider the sea state; the Atlantic here is usually calm in summer but can be lively in spring and autumn.
Because this is a shared tour, expect company—boats fill quickly in high season. The route is fixed and the pace brisk, but that is part of the appeal. You cover a lot of coastline in a short window, and the skipper will point out features as you go. For a first encounter with the Algarve's sea caves, this is an efficient and rewarding way to spend an hour on the water.
