Visit Silves & Explore the Arade River | Eco-Friendly Solar Boat

About This Experience
Discover this wonderful river & the medieval city of Silves, full of history, with a very rich nature and unforgettable landscapes.
The Arade River winds inland from Portimão through a landscape that feels a world away from the beachfront bustle. This outing follows the river upstream to Silves, the one-time Moorish capital of the Algarve, aboard a solar-powered boat that runs quietly and leaves no wake. It is a slow, contemplative journey, ideal for those who prefer scenery and history to adrenaline.
You embark at Portimão and glide upriver through a corridor of reeds, eucalyptus and umbrella pines. The boat is fitted with cushioned seats, shade canopies and small tables, and because it is electric, there is no engine noise to drown out birdsong or conversation. The captain narrates as you go, pointing out old quays, abandoned watermills and the ruins of Roman fish-salting tanks along the banks.
The river itself has been a trade route since Phoenician times, and the journey feels like a passage through layers of history. You pass beneath a handsome iron railway bridge and drift past orange groves and smallholdings before the red walls of Silves castle come into view on the hill above the town. The approach by water is far more atmospheric than arriving by road.
Once moored, you have roughly an hour and a half to explore Silves on your own. The castle is the obvious draw, a vast Moorish fortress with ramparts offering sweeping views over the town and the surrounding hills. The cathedral, built on the site of a grand mosque, is also worth a look, as is the riverside quarter with its cafés and traditional restaurants. If you prefer to skip the sightseeing, there is ample time for a leisurely lunch.
The return journey offers a different perspective, with the river mouth and the city of Portimão framed against the Atlantic. The light changes through the afternoon, and the pace remains unhurried. The entire outing lasts around four and a half hours, making it a full half-day excursion.
This trip suits couples, older travellers and families with children who are happy sitting still for a while. It is quiet, educational and gently paced. Silves is one of the Algarve's most historically significant towns, and approaching it by river feels appropriate and rather special. Bring a hat, water and comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the castle. The boat departs from Portimão Marina, which is straightforward to reach and well signposted from the main coast road.

In Ferragudo, located in a strategic location on the bank of the River Arade, is the fort of São João, whose origin dates back to the 17th century. This fort cooperated with the Fort of Santa Catarina, which was in front of it in Portimão, in defense of the river estuary. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, this military construction continued to be used until the end of the 19th century, when it was sold at public auction, and acquired by the poet Coelho Carvalho who transformed it into a private residence. The fort is well maintained and in addition to a wall that connects Angrinha beach to Praia Grande, it also has several guardhouses and a garden.

The Convent of São Francisco is an architectural complex from the 16th century, developed from a set of houses that were donated by Simão Correia, captain of Azamor, who had also built a small Chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, as a thank you for protection of God in wars. The buildings are harmoniously interconnected. The convent was built later, in 1541. Currently, in Portimão it is a property of public interest, but it is owned by private individuals, with no access to visits and in an advanced state of degradation.
