Water skiing off Armação de Pêra is one of those activities that looks harder than it is, at least once you have managed the first few wobbly seconds. The instructor will give you a brief rundown on the beach, covering stance, grip and the moment when the boat starts to pull and you need to let it lift you rather than fighting it. Then you wade out, the boat accelerates and you are up, skimming across the Atlantic with the coast sliding past.

The activity begins on Armação de Pêra's beach, which is wide and sandy with cafés and facilities nearby. Parking is available but fills up in summer, so arriving early or coming by taxi is often simpler. Wear swimwear you can move in, and expect to get wet repeatedly. A wetsuit is sometimes provided if the water is cold, though in summer most people ski in just their swimwear. Sunglasses with a strap are useful, as is sun cream that will not wash off the moment you hit the water.
