Faro Airport Transfers 2026: The Honest Comparison

Updated 25 days ago

Article

Every transfer operator owns their own ranking page. Here's a neutral 2026 comparison — Aerobus, Bolt, Uber, private transfer, taxi, public bus and car hire, with actual prices, journey times and the catch most guides miss (the Aerobus only runs May–October).

The Comparison Nobody Writes

Faro handled 10.4 million passengers in 2025 and almost all of them needed to get somewhere else in the Algarve. The transfer-options SERP is dominated by operator pages that exist to sell you their product. This is the comparison none of them will write.

We do the airport run constantly — picking up family, ferrying guests, doing pre-dawn departures. This is what actually works in 2026.

Your Five Real Options

For most UK and Irish visitors, the realistic choices are: Aerobus, Bolt/Uber, public bus, private transfer, taxi, or car hire. Each one wins on a different axis.

1. Aerobus 56 — The Seasonal Bargain

The Aerobus 56 connects Faro Airport to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos.

Price (2026): €4 to Albufeira, €8 to Portimão, €10 to Lagos. Pay the driver, cash or card.

Journey: Faro → Albufeira ~70 min, Faro → Lagos ~2 hr.

The catch nobody flags: The Aerobus 56 only runs May–October. Five services daily in peak season (May to October), two daily off-season. If your flight lands at 14:00 in late October you might get one; if it lands in February you will not.

For most UK families with one bag each, the Aerobus is hands-down the cheapest sensible option to Albufeira, Portimão or Lagos in summer. If you're going to Tavira, Sagres or anywhere not on the route, look elsewhere.

2. Bolt and Uber — The Right-Now Option

Both apps work at Faro. Pickup zone is well-signposted (follow signs from arrivals, not "taxi").

Price (2026): Faro → Albufeira typically €25–€32. Faro → Lagos €40–€55. Faro → Tavira €35–€50. Faro → Sagres €70–€85. Prices surge in the early-morning hours when most UK flights arrive — expect 20–40% more 03:00–07:00.

Journey: Faro → Albufeira ~40 min, Faro → Lagos ~75 min, Faro → Tavira ~40 min, Faro → Sagres ~90 min.

Pros: Door-to-door, no queue if a driver is available, English-speaking is hit or miss but most drivers are competent.

Cons: Surge pricing can double the fare. Cars are usually small saloons — three adults + luggage means cancellations. After ~21:30 driver availability thins.

Best for: Couples, small groups, anyone arriving mid-day, anyone going somewhere off the Aerobus route.

3. Private Pre-Booked Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers from Faro to Algarve resorts have been industrial since the late 90s. Dozens of operators compete on the same SERPs.

Price (2026): Faro → Albufeira from €42 advance, €60 walk-up. Faro → Lagos from €60. Faro → Tavira from €60. Larger 7-seaters and minibuses 30–40% more.

Journey: Same as Bolt, slightly more reliable on time.

Pros: Guaranteed pickup with a driver holding a name sign. Child seats included if requested in advance. No surge pricing. Reliable for groups of 4+.

Cons: Booking inflexibility — if your flight is delayed two hours, some operators struggle. Quality varies more than the brand pages admit. Read recent reviews, not "as featured in" panels.

Best for: Families with kids, groups, anyone arriving late at night, anyone whose flight is firm.

4. The Public Bus (Lines 14 and 16)

The forgotten option. Lines 14 and 16 run from Faro Airport into central Faro city (Forum Algarve / bus station / train station).

Price (2026): ~€2.35.

Journey: 20–25 minutes.

Use it for: If your destination is Faro itself, or if you're connecting onward by train to Tavira, Olhão, Loulé or Albufeira station, this is by far the cheapest leg. The train station has clear signage in English.

Skip it if: You're going directly to Albufeira/Lagos resorts. The faff of changing modes outweighs the saving.

5. Taxis

Available at the official rank outside arrivals.

Price (2026): Faro → Albufeira €50–€60. Faro → Lagos €80–€100. Faro → Tavira €55–€70. 20% surcharge for 7-seater taxis, 21:00–06:00, weekends, and luggage (technically). Insist on the meter (taxímetro) for any in-zone trip.

Pros: No app needed. Cards accepted in newer cars but cash safer.

Cons: Consistently more expensive than Bolt/Uber for the same trip, and unlike pre-booked transfers there's no name sign or built-in delay buffer.

Best for: Travellers who genuinely prefer not to use apps, late-night arrivals when ride-share supply thins.

6. Car Hire at the Airport

The other "transfer" — you become your own driver.

Price (2026): From €15/day for a basic compact in shoulder season, €30–€60/day in peak. Annual rentals £200–€400 per week for a family-sized car in August.

The 2026 update: The A22 motorway is now toll-free, so no Easytoll device is needed for Algarve-only trips. See our full driving guide for what to actually ask for at the desk.

Use it for: Anyone planning to explore beyond their resort, families staying in villas, anyone going to multiple bases (Lagos + Tavira) or to anywhere not on the A22 spine.

Skip it if: You're staying put at a single resort with onsite kids' clubs and have no plans to leave the pool.

The Decision Matrix by Destination

Going to Albufeira, in summer, mid-day flight, two adults: Aerobus 56 (€8 for the two of you) or Bolt (~€25 split between you). Aerobus wins on cost; Bolt wins on time and door-to-door.

Going to Lagos, family of four, July arrival, lots of luggage: Private pre-booked transfer (€60–€80) or car hire if you'll need it for excursions.

Going to Tavira, two adults, October: Private transfer or car hire. The Aerobus stops running mid-October on the eastward routes; the train via Faro is doable but adds time.

Going to Sagres, surfing trip, midwinter: Car hire. There's no public transport sensible alternative.

Going to Faro city, weekend break, no car needed: Bus 14 or 16 for €2.35. Walk the train station to your hotel.

Pre-dawn departure flight on the way home: Pre-book a private transfer the night before. Don't trust an app at 04:00. Confirm with the driver by WhatsApp the night before.

A Few Catches Worth Knowing

  • Aerobus website confusion: The official site is vamus.pt. Old EVA Transportes/aerobus.pt pages still float in SERPs.
  • Bolt vs Uber: Bolt has more drivers in the Algarve. Open both apps and book whichever is closer.
  • Child seats: Mandatory by Portuguese law to age 12 / 135cm. Bolt/Uber drivers rarely carry them. Pre-booked transfers do — request at booking.
  • Cash machines at Faro Airport: ATMs in arrivals are operator-owned with poor exchange rates. Wait for one inside the actual terminal.
  • Crossing back to Spain (Ayamonte / Huelva): Lines 56 and pre-booked transfers stop at the border. Most operators charge from Faro Airport to Vila Real de Santo António and you taxi over the bridge.

For where you're going from Faro:

Last updated: May 2026. Prices rechecked quarterly. The Aerobus 56 seasonal schedule (May–October) is from the official VAMUS timetable; if you're flying in November–April assume it isn't running.
