About This Experience

Passing through the village of Monchique, stopping at the central square, entering a distillery for tasting regional products, visiting the highest point of the Algarve, discovering the fantastic and...

The Serra de Monchique rises behind the Algarve's southern coast like a different country, a landscape of eucalyptus forest, cork oak and chestnut groves that is cooler, greener and altogether quieter than the beaches below. This four-hour tour takes you up into the mountains, stopping at the village of Monchique itself, visiting a distillery where you can taste the local medronho and honey, and climbing to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve, where the views stretch from the Atlantic to the Spanish border.

The route is designed to give you a sense of the mountain's character without rushing you through it. You stop in Monchique's central square, a small plaza surrounded by traditional buildings where the pace of life is slower and the air noticeably cooler than on the coast. The distillery visit introduces you to the artisanal production of medronho, a potent spirit made from the fruit of the strawberry tree, and you will taste other regional products that reflect the mountain's agricultural traditions.

Fóia, at just over nine hundred metres, is the high point in more ways than one. On a clear day the panorama is extraordinary, taking in the coastline, the rolling interior and the distant peaks of the Alentejo. The summit is often wrapped in mist, particularly in the cooler months, and the temperature can be several degrees lower than at sea level, so it is worth bringing a layer even in summer. The landscape up here is different too, shaped by fire and reforestation, with patches of native forest and expanses of scrubby heath that turn purple with heather in spring.

The tour is not physically demanding, and the four-hour duration includes time for stops, tastings and photographs rather than continuous driving. It suits those who want to see a side of the Algarve that is less developed and more traditional, where the economy still revolves around cork, honey and small-scale agriculture. If you are expecting dramatic mountain scenery in the Alpine sense, you will be disappointed; the Serra de Monchique is beautiful in a quieter, more understated way, and the appeal lies as much in the atmosphere and the local culture as in the views.

Monchique is less than an hour's drive from the central Algarve resorts, and the tour is a good fit for a half-day excursion if you want a break from the beach without committing to a full-day trip. The distillery tastings are a highlight, but they do involve alcohol, so be prepared for that if you are travelling with children or prefer to avoid spirits.
