About This Place
The Algarve's mountain town — Roman-era thermal springs, cork forests, medronho brandy, and the gateway to hiking trails up to Mount Foia at 902m.
Monchique is a charming mountain town high in the Serra de Monchique, the Algarve's only significant mountain range. At around 450m elevation, the air is cooler, the vegetation lusher, and the pace of life distinctly slower than on the coast below.
Caldas de Monchique
The thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique have been valued since Roman times. The water has a pH of 9.5 — the most alkaline in Portugal — and is traditionally associated with treating respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions. The Villa Termal resort is the only thermal spa in the Algarve, set in a peaceful wooded valley about 6km south of Monchique town.
Medronho
Monchique is the heartland of medronho, a potent spirit distilled from the berries of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) that grows wild across these hills. You'll find it served after meals throughout the Algarve, but here you can visit small distilleries and see how it's made. The Parque da Mina theme park offers demonstrations alongside other traditional crafts.
Hiking
The Serra de Monchique offers some of the best inland hiking in the Algarve. Trails wind through cork oak and eucalyptus forests, past streams and waterfalls, up to Mount Foia (902m) — the highest point in the region. The Foia trail from Monchique town is about 6km each way and takes 1–3 hours depending on your pace.
What to See in Town
The town itself has a pleasant central square, a 16th-century Franciscan convent (now partly ruined), and narrow streets with small shops selling handicrafts, honey, and medronho. The weekly market on the second Friday of each month is worth timing a visit around.
Practical Info
Monchique is about 30 minutes from Portimão by car, climbing steeply up the N266. It's a good half-day or full-day trip from the coast. In July, a small food market celebrates the local cured ham — a regional delicacy.
