About This Experience

Embark on a scenic journey through the Algarve’s inland landscapes on this guided bus tour to the charming towns of Silves and Monchique. Discover the region's Moorish history and enjoy stunning...

Silves and Monchique sit at opposite ends of the Algarve's inland character — one is a riverside town with a Moorish castle and a long history, the other a mountain village wrapped in greenery and eucalyptus-scented air. This eight-hour bus tour visits both, offering a full day away from the coast and a chance to see the region's interior without needing a hire car. It suits anyone who wants a guided introduction to the Algarve's quieter side, though it is worth noting that entrance fees to monuments are not included in the price, so budget accordingly.

Silves was the Moorish capital of the Algarve in the eleventh century, and the red sandstone castle that dominates the town is a reminder of that era. The fortress is one of the best-preserved Moorish structures in Portugal, with thick walls, a large courtyard, and views over the river and the surrounding orchards. The town itself is compact and walkable, with narrow streets, a Gothic cathedral, and a handful of cafés where you can sit and watch the river slide past. You have free time here to explore at your own pace, which means you can visit the castle if you want, or skip it and wander the old town instead.

The drive to Monchique takes you up into the Serra de Monchique, the Algarve's only real mountain range. The road climbs through cork and chestnut forests, and the temperature drops noticeably as you gain altitude. Monchique itself is a small, whitewashed town with a reputation for thermal springs and a slower pace of life. It sits at the foot of Fóia, the Algarve's highest peak, and the surrounding hills are green even in summer, which feels improbable after the drier landscape near the coast.

The town is known for its traditional handicrafts — wooden folding chairs, woven baskets, distilled medronho — and there are a few shops where you can browse without pressure. There is also time to walk the steep lanes, find a viewpoint, and take in the air, which smells of eucalyptus and woodsmoke depending on the season. Monchique is not dramatic or bustling; its appeal is in the contrast it offers to the beach towns, and in the sense that you have stepped into a different century.

The tour includes a guide who provides context on the history and landscape, though the quality of commentary can vary depending on who is leading. French and German language options are available but not guaranteed, so if you need a specific language, confirm when booking.

This is a coach tour, which means it is less flexible than a private trip but more affordable. The group size varies, and the pace is set for the majority, so if you are a fast walker or prefer to linger, you may find the timing either too brisk or too slow. Free cancellation is included, which is useful if the weather turns — Monchique in rain is atmospheric but not ideal for sightseeing.

The tour works best in spring or autumn when the mountains are at their greenest and the heat is manageable. Summer can be warm even at altitude, and winter brings the risk of cloud that obscures the views. Bring comfortable shoes, a light jacket for Monchique, and cash for entrance fees and refreshments.

What You'll See

1

Stop

1 hr

Start your excursion with a hotel pickup, and then travel north to the ancient town of Silves, your first stop of the day. Home to a magnificent Moorish castle surrounded by terracotta-roofed houses, the town has history and pretty scenery in equal measures. With its lofty hill-top location, the town was a strategically important stronghold for the Moors after their invasion in the 8th century. Wealth flowed into Silves during its Moorish Middle Age heyday only to be wiped out after a century of power struggles and a devastating earthquake. Much of today’s stately architecture originates from the 19th century when Silves came back into prominence.

2

Stop

1 hr

Admire the architecture and sights such as Silves Cathedral as you wander through the streets that lead to Silves Castle. Pay your entrance fee direct, and then head inside the impressive fortress to explore. Restored in the 1940s, the castle is thought to date as far back as the 11th century and features such as its central vaults have been beautifully preserved. Admire views over the town and the Algarve from the castle walls, and then return to your coach with your guide.

3

Stop

40 min

In Monchique mountains we will go till Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve, with free time to take pictures, visit a local shop with handcrafted articles and an opportunity to taste one of the typical liqueurs of the region. Admire the views from Fóia, the 2,959-foot (902-meter) mountain that towers over the whole Algarve. Soak up the views from the highest point in Algarve, and then return to your coach for the journey back to your hotel.
