Monchique: A mountain range that challenges the senses

About This Experience
The highest point in the Algarve, Monchique captivates with its green surroundings, the simplicity of its people and the quality of its gastronomy. Its strategic location thanks to its mountains made...
Monchique is the Algarve you do not see from the coast. The highest point in the region, it rises green and forested above the southern plains, a landscape of cork oak, chestnut and eucalyptus that feels more like the interior of Portugal than the sunbaked littoral. This seven-hour excursion takes you up into the serra, through villages that have changed little in outline for centuries, and into a version of the Algarve that challenges the postcard image most visitors arrive with.
The mountains have always mattered. The Romans valued Monchique for its strategic vantage and its thermal springs. The Moors fortified the high ground. In the fifteenth century, King João II was so taken by the therapeutic properties of the waters that he ordered the construction of a bathing facility, and the spa tradition has endured ever since. The town of Caldas de Monchique, tucked into a wooded valley, still draws visitors to its thermal baths, and the water remains the same mineral-rich spring that impressed the king six centuries ago.
The tour format is straightforward: a guided drive through the serra with stops at viewpoints, villages and sites of historical or natural interest. The route typically includes Fóia, the highest peak in the Algarve, where the views on a clear day stretch from the Atlantic to the Spanish border. The air is cooler up here, even in summer, and the vegetation shifts as you climb. The lower slopes are terraced with citrus and medronho orchards; higher up, the landscape opens into heath and rock.
Monchique's gastronomy is mountain food: smoked sausages, honey, wild herbs, and the fierce medronho spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree. The tour includes opportunities to taste regional products, and the quality is genuine. This is not a staged folklore experience; it is the food people here actually eat, prepared the way it has been for generations.
The pace is unhurried, which suits the landscape. Monchique does not lend itself to rushing. The roads wind, the views demand stops, and the villages invite lingering. If you are someone who finds beach days repetitive after a while, or if you want to understand the Algarve as a region rather than a coastline, this is one of the more effective ways to do it. The tour is well-rated, though the single review means you are taking a small leap of faith. Free cancellation is included, which lowers the risk.
