About This Experience

Immerse yourself in the rich history, culture, and beauty of the Algarve with us.

Silves and Monchique sit inland from the Algarve coast, away from the beaches and the resort towns, and visiting them together makes for a full day that takes in both the region's Moorish past and its quieter, greener interior. This is a private tour, so the itinerary can be adjusted to suit your interests, but the core of it is straightforward: a morning in Silves, an afternoon in Monchique, and a driver-guide who provides context and local knowledge along the way.

Silves was once the capital of the Algarve under Moorish rule, and the castle that dominates the town is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Portugal. You will park by the river and walk up through the narrow streets to the castle walls, with the guide pointing out details of the town's history and architecture as you go. The castle itself is open to explore, and the views from the ramparts over the terracotta rooftops and the surrounding countryside are worth the climb. There is also a cathedral nearby, built on the site of a former mosque, and time to wander the town centre if you wish.

Monchique is higher and cooler, set in the hills that rise behind the coast. The town is small and traditional, known for its woodwork, its medronho aguardente, and its position at the foot of the Algarve's highest peak, Fóia. The guide will walk you through the centre, explaining the town's history and pointing out local craft shops and cafés, but you are also free to explore on your own if you prefer. The pace is relaxed, and there is no sense of being hurried from one stop to the next.

The tour can be customised, so if you want to add a stop at a viewpoint, a local restaurant, or a craft workshop, that can usually be arranged. The itinerary is flexible, and the guide will adapt to your interests and energy levels. This is particularly useful if you are travelling with children or older family members, as the day can be made as active or as gentle as needed.

The tour is private, so you will not be sharing the vehicle or the guide with strangers, and the pace and focus are entirely yours to set. This makes it a good option for couples, families, or small groups who want a more personal experience than a large coach tour can offer. The guide's local knowledge is a significant part of the value, as they can provide context and stories that bring the history and culture of the region to life in a way that a guidebook cannot.

You will need to arrange your own pick-up point, which can be your hotel or accommodation if accessible, or a convenient meeting spot. The tour runs for around seven hours, so it is a full-day commitment, and you will want to bring water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. Free cancellation is available, which is useful if your plans change. The tour has strong reviews and a perfect rating, which suggests that the guide and the experience are both well regarded.

Silves is a beautiful medieval town. It was the capital of the Algarve during the period of Arab rule and is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The town is dominated by its impressive red sandstone castle, which was built by the Moors in the 8th century and later fortified by the Christian kings during the Reconquista. Visitors can explore the castle and its walls, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The town's narrow, winding streets are lined with whitewashed houses and traditional shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs. Other notable landmarks include the 13th-century Cathedral. The market is also a must-see.

Monchique is best visited on foot. A walk trough the steep streets of the town centre is rewarded with the views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of calm in unsuspected corners. We will park outside the town, then we`ll lead you walking to the center of the town. The guide will then set up a meeting point for pick up, and from there the customers will have more than 2 hours to enjoy Monchique on their own. (Including a lunch break)

Discover the peaceful charm of Caldas de Monchique, a cozy village often known as Termas de Monchique. It's loved for its soothing thermal springs and beautiful, green forest surroundings. Just a heads-up, only one small spring is open to the public.
