Explore Secret Caves and Beaches of Alvor - Boat & Kayak Tour

About This Experience
Discover the hidden wonders of the Algarve on our boat and kayak tour! Explore secluded beaches, uncover secret caves, and immerse yourself in untouched nature between Alvor and Praia do Vau. Our...
The stretch of coast between Alvor and Praia do Vau is less famous than the Benagil corridor, and that is precisely what makes it appealing. The cliffs here are lower, the beaches more sheltered, and the caves more intimate. This combined boat and kayak tour takes you into that quieter landscape, away from the busiest tourist routes, and offers a slower, more exploratory experience.
You begin aboard the Frontino, a handcrafted wooden boat built in 1957 and lovingly maintained. It is spacious, stable, and fitted with a bar, music, seating, and a restroom—more comfortable than most of the modern fibreglass vessels used for coastal tours. The boat takes you along the coast, pausing at points of interest while the skipper shares stories about the geology, the local fishing traditions, and the history of the area.
At a certain point, you transfer into kayaks to explore sections that the boat cannot reach. These are narrow channels, hidden coves, and sea caves that open onto secluded beaches where the sand is soft and untouched. The kayaking is gentle and guided, suitable for beginners, and the emphasis is on discovery rather than endurance. You paddle at your own pace, with the guides offering direction and assistance as needed.
The tour includes a swimming stop in calm, clear water, and the chance to explore beaches that are accessible only by sea. Some of these are tiny—just a crescent of sand backed by low cliffs—while others are larger and fringed with vegetation. The sense of seclusion is real; even in summer, you are unlikely to encounter many other people.
The entire experience lasts around three hours, which gives it a relaxed, unhurried rhythm. There is time to rest, swim, take photographs, and simply sit with the landscape. The Frontino's bar serves snacks and drinks, and the crew are attentive without being intrusive. This is not a high-adrenaline outing; it is a contemplative, immersive day on the water, designed for people who want to see the Algarve's coast as it was before mass tourism.
It suits families with older children, couples, and small groups who value authenticity over spectacle. The boat is stable and the kayaking is manageable, but you do need to be comfortable in the water and able to paddle for short stretches. Alvor is a working fishing village with good road access from Portimão and Lagos, and parking is available near the marina.
This tour offers a different kind of coastal experience—quieter, more personal, and focused on a part of the Algarve that still feels undiscovered. If you have already seen Benagil and want something less crowded and more intimate, this is a strong alternative.
