About This Place
Charming fishing village at the mouth of the Alvor estuary with excellent seafood restaurants. Gateway to Meia Praia beach and Alvor estuary boardwalk.
Alvor is a charming small town at the mouth of the Arade River, in the central Algarve. The town sits where river meets sea, giving it a distinctive character: it has both a historic fishing harbour and access to long sandy beaches. The old town, with its narrow cobbled streets and traditional Portuguese architecture, sits above the river; the newer development spreads along the shore.
What Makes Alvor Special
Alvor is less touristy than nearby Albufeira or Portimão, but still well-developed and easy to navigate. It's a good base for families or those wanting a quieter resort vibe. The town has good restaurants, bars, and local shops without feeling overdeveloped.
Beaches & Water
The beaches here are sandy and wide, extending west toward Praia da Rocha and east along the sheltered estuary. Swimming is generally safe, and the water is warmer than the open Atlantic. Beach bars and water sports are available.
The river estuary itself is home to wading birds, small fish, and sometimes dolphins and seals. Kayaking up the estuary is a popular activity, offering a different perspective from the beaches.
Old Town
The old town, above the river, retains genuine Portuguese character. Wander the narrow streets, visit the Igreja Matriz (parish church), and browse local shops and galleries. There are several good local restaurants where you can eat what the fishermen have caught that day.
Getting There
Alvor is on the coast west of Portimão, about 50km west of Faro. It's on the EN125 (the main coastal road) and easily accessible by car. The town is walkable, though it sprawls a bit.
When to Visit
Summer (June–September) is warm and busy. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer better balance of weather and crowds.
