About This Experience

Departing from Portimão Marina, this experience takes you out into the open ocean to encounter dolphins and explore the impressive rock formations of the Algarve coastline.

A two-and-a-half-hour catamaran cruise from Portimão combines dolphin watching in open water with a coastal run to Benagil, offering a slower, more stable alternative to the RIB tours that dominate this stretch of coast. You board the Belize III, a twin-hulled vessel with a toilet, free WiFi, and enough deck space to move around without elbowing other passengers. A marine biologist is on board to provide commentary, explain dolphin behaviour, and answer questions about the species you are likely to encounter.

The first part of the trip heads out into deeper water in search of dolphins. The most common species here are the common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin, both of which are resident in the waters off the Algarve and often seen in pods. The biologist will point out distinguishing features, explain feeding and social behaviour, and offer context on conservation efforts in the region. Sightings are not guaranteed—these are wild animals, not performers—but the success rate is high, particularly in spring and summer when the sea is calmer and the dolphins are more active.

After the dolphin search, the catamaran turns east and follows the coast toward Benagil. The route takes in the same dramatic cliffs, natural arches, and sea caves that other tours cover, and the boat slows at the more photogenic spots for photos. The Benagil Cave is the centrepiece: a vast hollow with a collapsed roof that lets sunlight fall onto the sand below. The catamaran pauses at the entrance long enough for everyone to see inside and take pictures, but you do not land. If time and conditions allow, there is a swimming stop in one of the sheltered bays along the coast, though this is weather-dependent and not guaranteed.

The catamaran is a good choice for families with young children, older passengers, or anyone who finds the speed and motion of a RIB uncomfortable. It is slower and less agile, which means you cover less ground and spend more time in transit, but the ride is smoother and the onboard facilities make it easier to relax. The marine biologist adds value if you are genuinely interested in the wildlife; if you are here purely for the cave, a faster boat will get you there and back in less time.

Portimão Marina is well signposted and has paid parking nearby, though spaces fill quickly in summer. Free cancellation is offered, which is useful given how quickly weather can change. Dolphin sightings are common but not guaranteed, and the swimming stop depends on sea conditions and the time available after the coastal tour. Dress for sun and spray, bring a towel if you plan to swim, and manage expectations: this is a shared tour on a large boat, not a private wildlife expedition.
