The Algarve's summer evenings are made for the water, and this three-hour catamaran cruise out of Portimão turns the sunset into a full-blown party. You board in the late afternoon, settle onto the spacious deck, and head west along the coast as a DJ spins and the open bar starts pouring. For the first hour, drinks are included — enough time to settle into the rhythm of the evening and meet whoever's sharing the rail beside you.

The boat makes swimming stops where the coast allows, usually off one of the quieter coves between Portimão and Alvor or toward Ferragudo depending on swell. The water is warm from June through September, cold but swimmable either side of that. People jump, float, climb back up the ladder, and the DJ keeps the energy up even when half the boat is overboard. It is loud, it is social, and it is designed to feel like a moving beach club rather than a sightseeing tour.

Once the complimentary hour ends, the onboard bar stays open — cocktails, beer, soft drinks — and you are welcome to keep buying. Most do. The sunset itself usually lands somewhere in the second half of the cruise, depending on the season, and the boat positions to give you the full western horizon. The light goes golden, then pink, then the music shifts slightly and the evening tips from day-party to night-out energy.

This is not a contemplative sunset sail. If you want quiet and a glass of wine, book a smaller boat. This is for people who came to the Algarve to be around other people, who do not mind a crowd, and who treat a boat ride as an excuse to dance rather than an excuse to sit still. The catamaran is stable, the vibe is friendly, and you will leave with a sunburn you did not plan for and at least three new Instagram follows.

Portimão's marina is the departure point, easily reached on foot if you are staying in the town centre or Praia da Rocha. If you are driving, the marina has paid parking that fills up on summer evenings, so arrive with time to spare. The cruise is offered from late spring through early autumn when the weather holds, and it books out on weekends in July and August. Thirty euros gets you aboard; what you spend after the first hour is on you.
