The Ria Formosa lagoon system stretches for sixty kilometres along the eastern Algarve, a maze of channels, mudflats and barrier islands that shifts with every tide. This is not a tour for people who want dramatic scenery or constant action. The Ria Formosa is subtle, and birdwatching rewards patience. If you have never used binoculars or do not know a heron from an egret, the guide will help, but you will get more from the outing if you are genuinely curious about birds and ecosystems rather than ticking off an activity. Families with older children often enjoy it, though younger ones may lose interest. The Segway element keeps things moving, but it is still a nature tour at its core.

The route is flat and the terrain is firm, so fitness is not an issue, but you do need reasonable balance and comfort on two wheels. The tour runs in all but the worst weather, and the lagoon is beautiful under cloud as well as sun. If you are staying outside Faro, an upgrade option includes hotel pickup and drop-off, which is worth considering if you do not have a car. Otherwise, the meeting point is easy to reach and parking is straightforward.
